Gray Hair Short Perm for Mature Women
July arrives with bright sunshine after the rainy season ends. People walking through the city are fully dressed for summer.
The client who visited my salon was Miwa Sugita, 60. Seven years ago, she decided to stop coloring her gray hair and has since been enjoying its natural beauty.
It had been two months since her last cut, and she felt that the current short bob silhouette had begun to feel slightly long and heavy.
Taking into account the luminous texture of her gray hair and her naturally square-shaped face, I proposed a short hairstyle designed to harmonize with her bone structure.
Because Ms. Sugita has straight, relatively coarse hair, I used a razor to create soft, feather-like edges that bring lightness and movement to the cut. To complement her facial structure, the weight of the hairstyle was set at cheekbone level.
By designing the front length to follow the jawline, the style fits naturally to the contours of her face, enhancing balance and proportion.
The nape was cut short on the inside with a razor and kept compact. A clean, tight nape is an essential detail—it visually lifts the facial line, which tends to soften and descend with age when viewed from the front.
Adding Dimension with a Perm
The purpose of this perm was to add dimension and depth to the hairstyle.
Gray hair tends to be healthy and resilient, which can make it more resistant to perms. For this reason, I selected a digital perm, which uses heat to create long-lasting curls.
By adding a soft one-curl perm, the natural flow of the hair and the roundness of the back of the head are enhanced, transforming the look into a more elegant and dynamic style.
Simply blow-drying creates a three-dimensional short hairstyle.
The curves of the hair, the rounded silhouette at the back of the head, and the nape that follows the line of the neck come together to create a back view that naturally draws the eye.
A Custom-Designed Short Haircut
This short hairstyle was custom-designed to suit Ms. Sugita’s hair texture and bone structure, forming a refined diamond-shaped silhouette.
The asymmetrical fringe adds depth and richness to her expression, gently framing the face.
Her deep red lipstick and linen dress further enhance her mature elegance, creating a harmonious balance between hairstyle and personal style.
Before & After
Before the cut, two months of growth had caused the center of gravity of the hairstyle to drop, resulting in a flatter, heavier impression.
After the transformation, the weight was lifted to eye level, and the front length was shifted from below the chin to the lip line.
The asymmetrical fringe softly covers the forehead and cheekbones, subtly correcting facial balance and drawing attention to the eyes. As a result, her expression appears brighter and more lively.
Beauty Through Life’s Stages
Ms. Sugita works as a facial yoga trainer, teaching her students how to use their facial muscles consciously and effectively.
Her three daughters are now adults, and beyond her roles as a “mother” or “wife,” she has a strong sense of personal identity. This individuality enriches her presence and beautifully reflects the freedom and grace that come with aging.
Just as spring brings fresh green leaves, autumn colors the trees, and winter allows leaves to fall quietly, life unfolds in stages.
Each stage calls for its own approach and balance.
Why not take this moment to explore a hairstyle that truly suits who you are today?
