The Beauty of Simplicity : Elegant Short Hair with Gray Hair and Perm

Under the blazing July sun, the streets of Ginza are filled with people dressed in full summer fashion.

Our guest at the salon today was Ms. Miwa Sugita. She has been embracing her gray hair for the past seven years since she decided to stop dyeing it.

It’s been two months since her last visit, and she requested a short haircut this time. Her current short bob was beginning to feel a little long.

To bring out the charm of her natural, easygoing personality and her square-shaped facial structure, I proposed a short hairstyle that would flatter her features.

Ms. Sugita has thick hair, so I used a razor to create soft, feather-like edges.

To complement her square face, I set the weight of the hairstyle at cheekbone level and shaped the front to follow the jawline. This creates a design that fits her bone structure beautifully.

For the nape area, I trimmed the innermost layer at the hairline and layered longer strands over it, giving it a compact and refined finish.

This tight, clean nape line also has the effect of tightening the overall facial contour, especially helpful for softening the signs of aging when viewed from the front.

After the haircut, we moved on to the perm.

The goal this time was to add dimension to the style. Even in its natural straight state, her hair already looked beautiful. But by adding a soft one-curl perm, the shape—particularly the volume at the back of the head—was enhanced, resulting in a more vibrant and elegant impression.

Since gray hair can be resistant to curls, we chose a digital perm that uses heat for better hold.

The result is a voluminous short hairstyle that comes to life with just a blow-dry.

The curved texture of the hair and the longer layers at the nape create a silhouette so eye-catching from behind.

This refined short haircut suits Ms. Sugita’s expressive and radiant personality perfectly.

The style is designed in a diamond shape to flatter her square face, and I added asymmetrical bangs to bring out her eyes and brows—making her facial expressions even more lively.

A deep red lipstick and a linen dress further highlight her mature charm.

The “before” style—a beautiful short bob—had started to drop in weight due to the passage of two months, with the focal point of the hairstyle sitting around nose-level.

In the “after” style, the focus is lifted to the eyes, with the front length raised from the chin to the lip line.

In her daily life, Ms. Sugita works as a facial expression trainer, teaching her students how to use their facial muscles.

With three grown daughters, her identity is no longer defined solely by roles like “mother” or “wife.” That unique sense of self gives her an even greater presence and seems to embody the beauty and freedom that can come with age.

Just as greenery buds in youth, leaves turn vivid in maturity, and gently fall in old age—life has its seasons.

And for each season, we must adapt. Reviewing old routines and finding new approaches may be the key.

In areas like hair, fashion, and makeup, why not consider seeking guidance from trusted professionals who can help you navigate each new stage with confidence?
